Many of you don't know us, so let me introduce ourselves! My name is Ben Magee. My dad & I are the founders of Lion's Head Coffee. I am 22 years old and here is my journey with coffee thus far. Up until age 15 no one in my family drank coffee, wild right? It was then that a close friend of mine from South Africa told me if I wanted to go to Heaven, then I had to drink coffee. Funny enough, I started drinking coffee from that day on. Pretty soon I began making coffee for guests at our home and got pretty good at it. Fast forward, at age 17, I took a ministry trip to Peru in which I got to preach the Gospel of Jesus and knew right then and there that's what I was called to do deep down inside. Only problem was, I knew I didn't want to ask people for money to do it. (And it cost a lot to live) My dad is the hardest worker I've ever known, and he taught us to work and be faithful with what God has given us. He has owned his own companies since he was 21 and has done full time ministry preaching all over the world simultaneously. So, I began asking God what I was supposed to do. During those years I would visit my sister in South Africa for a few weeks at a time, and the love for coffee and the seeds of possibilities began to grow. (South Africa is known for having a tremendous coffee culture) ... Back home in Texas, I was in prayer one day and as I looked out the window, I saw a coffee bush in my mind's eye. I thought, boom, I'm going to grow coffee in our backyard. Haha, I knew nothing about coffee and after researching it, you don't grow coffee in Texas. You need the right altitude, temperature, soil, etc. Well, I thought if I can't grow it, I can roast it. I researched the best roasting school and went up to Diedrich Headquarters in Idaho where I took a 3-day course. Several months later, a minister, Scott Lee, had stayed at our house in Texas and invited me to go with to his coffee farm in Guatemala. It was a God sent - I was able to meet the farmers and see that side of the world where all the growing & processing happens before we even launched! It was powerful. I learned that coffee farmers were getting ripped off and see the struggle it was for their families. It was eye opening to say the least. It was after all that my dad saw the passion and purpose I was going after and wanted to invest in what I was doing. We built out a climate-controlled room in his shop and started from the ground up. No huge investors, just a son and his father taking ground! Since then, we have grown significantly: We have shipped to nearly every state in the US, 9 countries overseas, are in several major grocery stores, distribute private labeling, had our own mobile cafe, and now we are in the process of building a bigger roastery in Royse City to keep up with demand. We have huge vision and believe without a shadow of doubt the Lord has His hand on us for such a time as this. To take dominion back from what the enemy has stolen in the world of coffee. We long to introduce people to the Life of Christ Jesus which will truly save and transform your soul.
